Both a geological wonder and historic site, the Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a massive natural preserve, containing many ancient ruins reachable only by Navajo-guided hikes. Still in use by a Navajo community, tours of the park are strictly regulated but offer a fascinating look into the ancient cultures that occupied the region. The western entrance to the monument, where the visitors center is set, is located immediately east of the town of Chinle.
Open daily 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Free entry. Canyon hike and overnight rates vary, check website for details.
